August 2022 - Scallywag Flag

Updated: Oct 10, 2022

Arr! Pirates are afoot! What fun it is to imagine yourself to be someone else! We already do that a lot at Reading Time with the Queens. Play is important to helping us find who we really are, even when we play around as something fantastical like a pirate!

Part of that play can involve making something new! And, of course, Miss Barb has a special craft to share that will get us in that scallywag mood!

Here is what you will need for supplies:

🏴‍☠️ One Jumbo Craft Stick

🏴‍☠️ Five to Six Small Craft Sticks

🏴‍☠️ Markers

🏴‍☠️ School Glue

  1. Color the sticks lightly, so they look "weathered." (That just means old and worn.)

  2. Dab a bit of glue on the backside tip of each small stick.

  3. Place them one at a time on the Jumbo stick. Stagger the colors to achieve stripes.

  4. Keep the flag flat as you go so sticks don't fall off.

  5. Set aside for a few hours to completely dry.

Of course, you can decorate it even more with any pirate treasure you have! Gems, jewels, gold, arrrrr! Use that pirate booty to make it a beauty!

You can make this craft at home, but we know you want to join us for our pirate fun in person! Arr! Pirates! will start at 10:30am at Winnie & Mo's Bookshop, 343 A St, Idaho Falls. We recommend arriving a bit early to have time to finish your craft!

We will be posting a recorded version of Arr! Pirates! later on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook as soon as we are able. Craft Corner will be part of that video, so if you need extra help, Miss Barb and Miss Cali will be happy to guide you!

Thank you for supporting Reading Time every month! We hope you are able to join us for in-person events, but we understand if you can't. That's why we work to ensure that the magic of our programs can be experienced wherever you are!

As we gear up for school to start again, it's nice to take a moment to play together. Remember that each of us is unique and special! People can like us exactly as we are, especially our unique ways of seeing the world and skills that are special to us. That's the pirate way! Arr!
