March 2025 - Making Music

Writer: Reading Time with the QueensReading Time with the Queens

A merry Musical March to all of you from me, Miss Barb!

People can play music in a marching band, an orchestra, or in one of the many other ways we make music together. With each person playing a different instrument, a new beautiful sound can be created. I think this is a true testament to the power of working together.

This month, we are going to work together to learn the very basics of Making Music: notes on a staff. True, our musical compositions might not make sense or, if you will, be noteworthy. However, we hope that your kiddos enjoy the experience of what might be their first contact with written music. It just so happens that we are adding some whimsy by notating with stickers and pom-poms.

🎵 Making Music 🎵

SUPPLY LIST

🎶 Music Writing Pad

🎶 Construction Paper

🎶 Music Note Stickers

🎶 PomPoms or Buttons

🎶 Glue (not glue stick)

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: You can purchase the music writing pad online, print off samples from online, or even create your own using white paper, ruler, and a pen or marker. Music note stickers can also be purchased online.

Step 2: Glue your Buttons or PomPoms down anywhere on the music paper and in any order you wish. Rotate with the stickers. You can make some high and some low, you can go in rainbow color order, or use all the same colors.

Step 3: After your Buttons or PomPoms dry, you can leave them as is or draw the stem (the line that goes up or down from the note), flag (the curved line that hangs down from the top of some stems), or beam (the straight line that attaches two notes).

Step 4: Glue the music sheet to a piece of construction paper.

We hope you will join us for making this craft in person on March 8th! We have some exciting changes coming to our program, so stay tuned.
