May 2022 - Vroom Vroom Racer

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

Vroom vroom! It’s time for learning about all things that speed down the racetrack, build our skyscrapers, or plow our fields! Cars, Trucks, Steam Shovels, and everything in between!

Miss Barb has created something with one of our favorite supplies: the ever-versatile toilet paper tube!

Make sure to attend this month’s Reading Time to make this craft…or, you can follow the instructions below to make it from home!

Our craft is based in part on these examples from Glue Sticks & Gumdrops: https://gluesticksgumdrops.com/car-craft-for-kids/

Here is what you will need for supplies:

🚗 Toilet paper tube

🚗 Glue stick

🚗 Tape

🚗 Scissors

🚗 Construction paper, any color,

cut to 4 inch x 6 inch

🚗 Black card stock, cut 4 - 2 inch circles

🚗 Yellow card stock, cut 2 - 2 inch circles

🚗 White card stock, cut 4 - 1 inch circles

🚗 Number stickers

🚗 Star stickers

Optional: Add a driver. We’ve been saving these friends from a purchase several years ago at a local hobby store.

  1. Tape one end of the construction paper to the tube & roll the rest around tube. Tape to attach.

2. The black & white card stock circles are used to make tires. Glue the white circle on the middle of the back circle. Do this 4 times for 4 tires!

3. Next, it’s time to glue the tires onto the car. Apply glue to one half on the backside of the black circle. The tube will be a little bit heavy.

Stick the tire onto the car body, keep watch that the tire touches the working surface. Pull off & adjust if necessary - do only one side at a time. Once both tires are attached use fingers to press into place, hold for a few minutes. Repeat on other side. (It’s like you’re in your very own car garage!)

4. This step is potentially optional, but we opted for a more finished look. The yellow 2-inch circles are glued on the outer edge of the paper, then set into place on the front & back of tube openings.

5. Use the Number stickers & Star stickers to decorate!

And there you go! Your very own Vroom Vroom Racer! We love making crafts that double as toys! If you make your own Racer, let us know by tagging us on Social Media! @ReadingTimeWithTheQueens

Vroom Vroom will be at Winnie & Mo’s Bookshop in Idaho Falls @ 575 S 3rd E. We will start at 10:30am sharp, so make sure you are there a bit early if you want to finish your craft!

We will be posting a recorded version of Vroom Vroom later on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook as soon as we are able. Craft Corner will be part of that video, so if you need extra help, Miss Barb and Miss Cali will be happy to guide you!

Thank you for supporting Reading Time every month! We hope you are able to join us for in-person events, but we understand if you can't. That's why we work to ensure that the magic of our programs can be experienced wherever you are!

And! Stay tuned for updates on next month’s craft, to be created at your local PRIDE event! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
